Mzoxolo Vimba

Curator of The Gods Must Be Crazy, a solo exhibition by Tshepo Sizwe Phokojoe | 02.10.25 - 13.11.25

Hailing from Johannesburg, South Africa, Mzoxolo Vimba embraces a 30-30-30 approach dedicated to the creative industry: building institutions, being an artist, and advocacy. Vimba has served as one of the organising leads at the formidable stages of the Festac Africa Festival between 2022 and 2024. Between 2017 and 2025, Vimba served in a formal and collaborative capacity as a project assistant, head of research and archives, creative director, and cultural producer at Keleketla Media Arts NPC.

Beyond employment, Vimba is a seasoned institution builder dedicated to sculpting environments that nurture the creative spirit and close access gaps for artists. He is the co-founder of “Black Thought Symposium”; a collective that operates as an open source for art, politics, and academia, “#artistsinrevolution”; an institution that uses art as a sustainable tool of protest, which has led to a recent street name change in braamfontein Johannesburg. Lastly, Vimba is a founder of “Studio Sunday Best,”; a member of Business and Arts South Africa (BASA), which operates as a collaboration network and archive portal that helps artists with curatorial development, professional practice, and making a living out of their creative practices. Through Studio Sunday Best, he has had significant success collaborating, amongst others, with Nicholas Hlobo Studio, Conhill, and Southern African Foundation and Fellowship for Contemporary Art (SAFFCA), leading to multiple projects including exhibitions, workshops, prizes, and residencies for artists.

As an artist, Vimba’s work has had a moderate but notable impact, having shown in group exhibitions in South Africa, Zimbabwe, and Ghana, with residencies at Esraro in Buenos Aires, Argentina, and the Open Africa Institute, Stellenbosch University. His photography is in private and public collections, including Wits University’s Gender Equity Office and the South African National Museum’s Art Bank.
