The Art of Existing

By Careshia Esperanza and Kyle Jardine

Long Gallery: 18.06.26 - 30.07.26

The Art of Existing, by emerging artists Kyle Jardine and Careshia Esperanza, explores themes of identity, existence, and community through a deeply personal and vibrant visual language.

Set against the backdrop of a world in flux, this exhibition foregrounds themes of repression and liberation, pain and joy, isolation and belonging. Through painting and mixed media, Jardine and Esperanza present a dynamic dialogue between the inner world and the external landscape, a conversation held in colour, line, and form.

The Art of Existing examines the relevance of being alive and growing up in a modern society, not as passive or suffering identities, but as active, radiant forces of self-determination.

The exhibition asks, what does it mean to be seen, to be held, to express, to belong in a world when gender expression has been both celebrated and suppressed? What does this possibility look like in the distinctive worlds the artists have created?

The artists' styles are unique yet symbiotic. Drawing on his theatrical background, Kyle Jardine brings playful structure and whimsical complexity to his works to celebrate identity and emotional truth. Through the fantastical worlds he constructs, Jardine explores themes of memory, place & imagination. Within these spaces, objects carry deep significance and a historical flair becomes a language for both performance and authenticity. His colourful, storybook-like scenes depict a distinct perspective on masculinity, romance, and beauty, weaving humour and tenderness through characters that invite curiosity and connection.

In conversation, Careshia Esperanza’s work explores the depth of the feminine through fluid linework, rich contrasts, and intimate figurative compositions. Her pieces juxtapose soft hues and flowing expressions against dark tones, punctuating tension with bursts of colour that affirm resilience and individuality. Through gesture and figuration, Esperanza approaches the feminine form as a site of power, vulnerability, and transformation. The artist captures moments of sensuality, softness, and solitude, depicting the quiet strength of femininity. Her work reflects the layered experience of womanhood, offering forms that become both a symbol of identity and a vessel for memory.

United by a shared palette and visual rhythm, their works echo common themes of vulnerability, emergence, and joy. While reflecting on the struggles of isolation and inner conflict, their creative practices are fundamentally rooted in hope, reaffirming how creativity can serve as a lifeline for healing and connection. Through a vibrant celebration of colour, line and form, The Art of Existing pays homage to the power of community and the joy of belonging. It invites viewers to contemplate their own emotional dualities and the way we navigate both solitude and connection.
