DOPPELGÄNGERS. FUTUREGÄNGERS. UBERGÄNGERS.

By Stefan Carstens and Luke Carstens

Long Gallery - 18.01.24 - 29.02.24

We are constantly working to contextualize ourselves. We are looking - and listening - for the features that will help us discern something of ourselves in our surroundings. Is this the root of our Pareidolia? We see a form in the rocks, a figure in the clouds, a face in the plug socket - what are those creatures suggested by the arrangement of the stars?

We play a game. A game of perceptions - not too far removed perhaps from a Rorschach test. Eyes, ears, noses, mouths remixed through a process of construction, deconstruction, reconstruction and iteration. We are creating an expanding collection of "characters" - a Rogues' gallery of sorts - equally dangerous and droll in their distortions.

By using repeating elements and mirrored parts we are establishing patterns of imagined or indeed potential versions of the future. They serve as predictors of what is to come. And then, they might go beyond their ordinary, expected roles and become transformative forces, superior or transcendental variations.

Allegorically, these characters are us. Our Doppelgängers. Our Futuregängers. Our Ubergängers. What we are. What we will be. What we aspire to transcend.
