Session 2: Decoding the art world

You will have the chance to hear from hosts Mirjam Asmal and Charl Bezuidenhout as they talk about what it means to be a professional artist, industry standards, and the gallery system as a whole, as well as hear some words of wisdom from other industry professionals.

Mirjam Asmal, AVA Director

Mirjam Asmal has been the director of AVA since 2015. In the years prior to AVA, Mirjam set up and ran Pro Helvetia Liaison Office South Africa, was the Managing Director of CAPE Africa Platform as well as the Programme Manager Arts, Culture & Heritage at !Khwa ttu San Centre.

In between fixed positions, Mirjam has operated as independent curator/producer/ manager of contemporary art events.

Charl Bezuidenhout, owner of Woldart Gallery

Charl Bezuidenhout’s passion for art is obvious from the way Worldart operates; the gallery is solely run by Bezuidenhout – from finding the artists to marketing their work and the gallery, to working the gallery floor - he is involved in every aspect of the art gallery in Cape Town.

“I’m passionate about the art in my gallery, explains Bezuidenhout. “I’m simply exposing you to painters that I’ve fallen in love with, and talking about it, discussing it with people who come in. It’s up to you to make the decision and find what you like. I’m not selling used cars here, you have to live with this painting and love it too.”
